This panel will address the working conditions on app platforms, the control mechanisms employed by companies through the algorithm, and how workers are organizing to win their rights in this new sector of 21st century capitalism.
Panel #2: Monday, April 24th, 2:30 PM
Unionizing to Fight for our Rights – Challenges Facing Unions in the 21st Century
This panel will deal with the new wave of unionization in the 21st century. We will discuss the struggles and forms of organizing against the job insecurity, denial of labor rights, and suffering experienced by workers, including the anti-union campaigns carried out by companies. We will also analyze the characteristics of new trade unionism and highlight the importance of grassroots organizing to push back.
Panel #3: Tuesday, April 25th, 2:00 PM
Labor Rights in the 21st Century – Organizing and Struggle for the Labor Rights of Gig Workers
In this panel, we will explore the political and legal battles unions are undertaking. We will study attempts to regulate gig work currently under debate around the world, including their scope and their limitations, and how workers are organizing to shape those debates. We will also talk about how to face anti-union campaigns carried out by both companies and governments that seek to prevent our organizing. Finally, we will discuss strategies to win labor rights and the importance of taking our fights to the streets and the independent organization of workers.
Panel #4: Wednesday, April 26th, 9:00 AM
International Organizing Among Gig Workers – United in One Fight
Platform work is a phenomenon that now touches nearly all parts of the world and equalizes working conditions across countries. In this last panel, we will highlight the experiences of coordination between workers across countries and the importance of international organizing among gig and platform workers to wage an international battle against transnational companies.
