Solidarity with Workers and Migrants in Los Angeles. Freedom for All Detainees. Stop the Persecution of Migrants

From SiTraRepA (the grassroots union of app-based delivery workers in Argentina), we send our full solidarity to our comrades from the California Gig Workers Union and SEIU, with whom we co-organized the 1st International Congress of Platform Workers in Los Angeles in 2023.

Since the beginning of Trump’s second term, violent and illegal raids and arrests of migrants have been taking place throughout the U.S. On Friday, June 6, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) launched a wave of brutal and unlawful raids, even detaining migrant workers at their own workplaces.

In Los Angeles—just as in Argentina and all around the world—many platform workers are migrants. We at SiTraRepA, stand with them unconditionally and oppose all forms of persecution or deportation: everyone has the right to work, and no human being is illegal. As we said at our First International Congress: Platform workers of the world, unite!

In this context, on Friday 6, ICE physically assaulted and detained David Huerta, president of SEIU California, while he was documenting ICE’s arbitrary and illegal detentions. We denounce the outrageous arrest of a union leader who was simply exercising his legal right to film police actions and brutality. David Huerta has just been released, but he still faces legal charges stemming from his arrest. We stand in solidarity with SEIU members and demand the immediate release of all detainees and the dropping of all charges against David Huerta and all the others.

These brutal arrests sparked large mobilizations and protests from workers and communities across Los Angeles. On Sunday, June 8, the Trump administration deployed 2,000 National Guard troops to the city, overruling state authorities and launching a violent crackdown on those rightfully protesting these reactionary and xenophobic measures. We reject this repressive operation and extend our full solidarity to the workers who are resisting these attacks.
